First king of Saudi Arabia from 1932. His
father was the son of the sultan of Nejd, at
whose capital, Riyadh, Ibn Saud was born. In
1891 a rival group seized Riyadh, and Ibn
Saud went into exile with his father, who
resigned his claim to the throne in his son's
favour. In 1902 Ibn Saud recaptured Riyadh
and recovered the kingdom, and by 1921 he had
brought all central Arabia under his rule. In
1924 he invaded the Hejaz, of which he was
proclaimed king in 1926. Nejd and the Hejaz
were united in 1932 in the kingdom of Saudi
Arabia. Ibn Saud introduced programmes for
modernization with revenue from oil, which
was discovered in 1936.
